Sweden and Belarus join Serbia in Continental Cup second round
2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup
Novi Sad, Serbia, June 9, 2019. The Olympic dream is still alive for Beach Volleyball players from Sweden and Belarus as these countries claimed second place at the 2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup event held at Štrand beach in the city of Novi Sad. After Serbia secured the top spot in Pool A on Saturday, Sweden and Belarus claimed the second place in the women’s and men’s competition, respectively.
As action resumed on Sunday in the women’s tournament, Israel beat Albania 2-0, to play Sweden for second place in the group. Sweden eventually triumphed in a Golden Match to progress to the next round. Aliona Cherkez/Tzeela Mohar of Israel beat Camilla Nilsson/Sofia Ögren 2-0 (21-19, 21-18), before twin sisters Susanna and Kristina Thurin edged Sofia Starikov/Anita Dave 2-1 (21-19, 19-21, 15-10). In the all-important and dramatic Golden Match that followed, the Thurin sisters beat Cherkez/Starikov 2-1 (21-11, 15-21, 17-15).
In the men’s competition, Romania beat San Marino 2-0 to set up a clash with Belarus for second place. Belarus won in straight matches and qualified to the next round. Aliaksandr Dziadkou and Pavel Piatrushka beat Lucian Badiceanu/Robert Virlan 2-0 (21-13, 21-17) before Andrei Mitrafanau/Ilya Abramenka shut out Bogdan Mehedinteanu/Tudorel Farcas 2-0 (21-12, 21-16) as well.
The second round of the Continental Cup is due to take place in May 2020, while the Finals will run from June 22 to 28, 2020, in the Netherlands. The eventual winners will secure a spot for their country in the Beach Volleyball competition of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
