Qualification for #EuroBeachVolleyU18 in Brno is over!
2018 CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship
Brno, Czech Republic, August 15, 2018. Two men’s pairs out of four and two women’s teams out of five made it through to the Main Draw of #EuroBeachVolleyU18 that starts on Thursday. Spyridon Chandrinos and his brother Aristeidis from Greece and Slovakia’s Pavel Ehrenwald/Bruno Pavlicko complete the line-up of the 32 men’s teams contesting the Main Draw. Tandems from Hungary and Bulgaria progressed to the women’s Main Draw following completion of the qualification round.
The fans in attendance at Brno Reservoir were able to watch 11 matches full of emotions, with five women’s and four men’s teams literally fighting with all they had for their place in the Main Draw of #EuroBeachVolleyU18. The qualification round ran as per the double-elimination system. “That was Henrique’s [Henrique Gomes, CEV Technical Supervisor] idea to play double-elimination system,” Competition Director Jan Zvěřina said. “I think all of the teams were happy to play this way.” This meant that teams had to win twice to complete the qualification round successfully and progress to the Main Draw.
Greek siblings Aristeidis and Spyridon Chandrinos were the first ones to qualify for the #EuroBeachVolleyU18 Main Draw on Wednesday in Brno
The 17-year-young Spyridon Chandrinos and his 15-year-old younger brother Aristeidis were the first to qualify for the Main Draw. The second men’s team, who ended Wednesday’s programme with two victories, are Bruno Pavlicko and Pavel Ehrenwald of Slovakia. “It was our only goal to advance to the Main Draw here in Brno,” Pavlicko said. “It was important that we won the first match, before losing to the Greek team. Fortunately, we won our last match against the Andorrans and we will play again tomorrow.” The Slovaks are participating in a major event such as #EuroBeachVolleyU18 for the first time and they are obviously happy to play in the group stage. “We will play without pressure but still want to improve and gain experience,” Ehrenwald added.
Bulgaria’s Malina Gadzheva/Nikol Duleva were excited to progress to the Main Draw after they won two matches in a row. They did so after losing their opening match to the other qualifiers of the day, Zita Divényi and Zsófia Réthelyi from Hungary. “We are so excited,” Duleva said. “This is my first European competition and we are playing together for the first year, so we are very happy.” “We are happy to play in such an environment as the Brno Reservoir,” partner Gadzheva added.
In total, 64 teams from 31 countries will start tomorrow’s Main Draw at #EuroBeachVolleyU18 in Brno; the new U18 European champions will emerge on Sunday after another four days of exciting competition.
