1-Star/Satellite Ljubljana sparks Beach Volleyball fever in Slovenia
2018 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Ljubljana

Ljubljana, Slovenia, July 30, 2018. This year, Ljubljana’s traditional Beach Volleyball party will take place for the first time as a 1-Star/Satellite event, therefore attracting as many as 96 teams from 29 countries, which stands as an all-time record in the history of Beach Volleyball tournaments held in Slovenia.

“This year’s numbers are really fascinating! The tournament is set to reach an even higher level and is getting more and more recognised worldwide and in Slovenia, as well. Our Beach Volleyball players are achieving better and better results on the international stage, and now all of our best players will be performing on home soil. I believe this is of huge importance for the event itself and we are sure we will witness another Beach Volleyball spectacle right in the centre of Ljubljana,” Gregor Humerca, Secretary General of the Volleyball Federation of Slovenia, commented.

Slovenia have as many as four teams per gender seeded in the Main Draw and additionally one team per gender will do their best to progress through the Qualification Round. Jan Pokeršnik and Nejc Zemljak will be playing in Ljubljana as top seeded team in the men’s tournament, while best women’s team Tjaša Kotnik and Tjaša Jančar have the no. 9 seed. Annemieke Driessen and Ilke Meertens from the Netherlands will be leading the way for the women’s entries. Last year’s bronze medallists – the Makhno twins from Ukraine – will enter the tournament as well.

Sixteen teams per gender will participate in the qualification round on August 3 at Ludus Sports Park in Črnuče trying to proceed to the Main Draw that will start on the next day in Črnuče and at the Congress Square. The semi-finals and finals are due to take place on August 5.

The event is built on solid foundations of the Ljubljana Beach Volley Challenge that has been organised for the last couple of years, and last year’s CEV European Beach Volleyball Masters & Satellite tournament, which was a success in all aspects. Beside great Beach Volleyball rallies, the 1-Star/Satellite tournament in Ljubljana will again aim to bring the beach right to the city centre. Attractive dance performances, good music, many fun games and activities for visitors and water adventures for the kids will spice up the event.
