Race for the medals heats up at 1-Star Manavgat Open

Manavgat, Turkey, June 22, 2018. Teams from the Netherlands, Brazil, Denmark and Spain will play for the medals of the men’s competition at the 1-Star event in Manavgat on Saturday.

Jannes van der Ham/Sven Vismans of the Netherlands secured their spot in the semis after a 21-15, 21-16 victory over Yusuf Ozdemir and Ali Cebeci of Turkey.

In the other quarterfinals, Oscar Brandão/Luciano Ferreira de Paula (BRA) beat Gabriel Burlacu/Jake MacNeil (CAN) 2-0 (21-14, 22-20) while Kristoffer Abell and Daniel Thomsen (DEN) claimed the Scandinavian derby with Sweden’s Jakob Molin and Linus Tholse (21-11, 21-18) to qualify to the semis. “I’m happy that we could win the match and qualified to the semis. Thank you to the local fans for the support,” said Brazilian Luciano.

In the last match of the night, Javier and Alejandro Huerta Pastor of Spain secured the last semi-final spot as they beat Swiss Quentin Métral/Simon Hagenbuch 21-19, 21-11.    

Turkish home stars in contention for women’s gold  


Teams from Turkey, Japan and Belgium progressed to the women’s semi-finals of the 1-Star event in Manavgat, Turkey. Friday featured a long programme with the Round of 12 matches followed by the quarterfinals to determine the composition of Saturday’s semis.

The silver medal winner from the inaugural European Snow Volleyball Championship and Alanya 1-Star event Aleyna Vence together with partner Merve Nezir opened the programme of the quarterfinals playing Greece’s Panagiota Karagkouni and Aliki Spiliotopoulou for a spot in the semis. The home stars could find their rhythm and celebrated a compelling 21-15, 21-3 victory. Actually, the match ended by the score of 6-3 in the second set when Karagkouni had to withdraw from the competition because of injury.

“I feel sorry for Karagkouni but it’s amazing to win the match and we will play for the podium in the semis after I did the same in Alanya. Many thanks to the fans for their support. I hope this time we can win the gold medal,” Vence said.


Belgian sensation Sarah Cools and Lisa Van den Donder qualified for the semis of the Manavgat Open

Japan’s Satono Ishitsubo and Asami Shiba played Denmark’s Maria Elisabeth Tyndeskov and Line Trans Hansen for a spot in the semis. After losing the first set, the Japanese team stormed back to claim a 19-21, 21-8, 19-17 victory to move on to the semis.

Another Japanese team, Erika Habaguchi and Yurika Sakaguchi defeated a second Danish team, Helle Søndergård/Simone Maria Okholm Hansen, in 54 minutes (21-13, 27-25) and qualified for the semis as well.

Belgian rookies Sarah Cools/Lisa Van den Vonder beat Greece’s Dimitra Manavi and Konstantina Tsopoulou 2-0 (32-30, 21-15), thus taking the last spot in the semis. “It is unbelievable! We are in the semis at Manavgat Open! We did not expect this result but we are obviously happy and now we want to win our semi-final match as well,” Cools said.
