2018 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Manavgat

Manavgat, Turkey, June 20, 2018. After two rounds of qualifications, eight teams – four per gender, including two from Belgium and another two from Japan – qualified for the Main Draw of the 1-Star event, which is taking place from Wednesday to Saturday in Manavgat, Turkey.

Junki Hatabe and Momota Shimada from Japan opened the men’s qualifications on the centre court playing against Norway’s Sadegh Mohajer/Kjetil Tellnes. The strong defence game of the Norwegians and Mohajer’s incredible service contributed towards a landslide 21-12 first set win for the Scandinavian side. After the second set (21-19), however, the Japanese had drawn level in the match and by showing much determination, Hatabe and Shimada emerged victorious from the tiebreak as well (15-13).

In the other matches of the first round, Hugo Rojas/Inocencio Lario (ESP), Florian Ertl/Mathias Seiser (AUT), Jérémy Silvestre/Adrian Caravano (FRA), Lander Vandecaveye/Louis Vandecaveye (BEL) and Jannes van der Ham/Sven Vismans (NED) beat their respective opponents 2-0 and progressed to the next round.

The afternoon session started with Denmark’s Mads Rosager/Martin Trans Hansen comfortably routing Hatabe/Shimada 2-0 (21-13, 21-11) to secure their spot in the Main Draw. Spain’s Lario/Rojas played against Ertl/Seiser (AUT), with the Spaniards catching a promising start to take the first set 21-14. However, the Austrians responded by playing very aggressively in the second to storm to a comprehensive win. In the deciding set, the Austrian team qualified to the Main Draw after their opponents withdrew due to injury. Van der Ham/Vismans and the Vandecaveyes secured the remaining spots in the Main Draw as they beat opponents from Ukraine and France 2-0.

In the women’s qualification, the Japanese team Satono Ishitsubo/Asami Shiba claimed two consecutive victories to progress to the next round.

Sarah Cools/Lisa Van den Vonder (BEL, pictured above) competed against France’s Mia Guyot Polverini/Ophélie Lusson (FRA) and surprised with a 22-20 win in the first set.
