Austria stays strong at the FIVB World Tour BADEN OPEN

Baden, Austria, June 15, 2018. Clear results for the women’s group matches, only one match was decided in the third set. Similar results for the men’s matches, where only two finished in the third set. Austria dominated the first day of the main draws at the BADEN OPEN with six of their 10 teams qualifying for the quarterfinals. Others qualifying for the second day were Germany, Netherlands, Ukraine, Latvia and Norway from the women’s teams and Brazil, Norway and China from the men’s tournament.

Women, pool matches

In Pool A, the favourites Lena Plesiutschnig/Katharina Schützenhöfer (AUT) won against both the Japanese Satono Ishitsubo/Asami Shiba 2-1 and Marta Ozolina/Agnese Caica (LAT) 2-0. Ozolina/Caica succeeded against Sara Malmström/Fanny Lindström (SWE) 2-0. The latter lost against the Japanese team too.

Teresa Mersmann/Cinja Tillmann (GER) dominated in Pool B with two wins against Franziska Friedl/Nadine Strauss (AUT) and Ana Skarlovnik/Tjasa Kotnik (SLO), both 2-0 making them group winners. The Austrians won 2-0 against Helle Søndergård/Simone Okholm Hansen (DEN). The last victory went to the two Slovenians Skarlovnik/Kotnik against Søndergård/Okholm (DEN).

In Pool C, the sisters Ronja and Dorina Klinger scored against Inna and Iryna Makhno (UKR) and Lisa-Sophie Kotzan/Leonie Klinke (GER). Kotzan/Klinke (GER) and Makhno/Makhno both succeeded against Dimitra Manavi/Konstantina Tsopoulou (GRE) in under half an hour in two sets.

In Pool D, the Swedish team Kristina Thurin/Susanna Thurin and the Norwegians Emilie Olimstad/Janne Pedersen were victorious against Katharina Almer/Valerie Teufl (AUT) and Annemieke Driessen/Ilke Meertens (NED), respectively. However, Driessen/Meertens then won against Almer/Teufl. The Norwegian women’s team got themselves another two-set win against the Swedish team.

Men, pool matches


The home favourites Clemens Doppler/Alexander Horst (AUT) had a two-set win against the Brazilians Márcio Gaudie/Arthur Mariano Lanci and Hasan Hüseyin Mermer/Safa Urlu (TUR) 2-1, who then won against Vasilii Ivanov/Sergey Gorbenko (RUS) 2-0. With the 2-0 victory from Márcio Gaudie/Arthur against Ivanov/Gorbenko, the Pool A matches came to an end.

In Pool B, Tobias Winter/Julian Hörl (AUT) won against Moritz Kindl/Marian Klaffinger (AUT) 2-0 and the Turkish team Giginoglu/Gögtepe, 2-1. Takumi Takahashi/Yusuke Ishijima (JPN) lost against Giginoglu/Gögtepe but then scored a victory against Kindl/Klaffinger.


Beach Volleyball Vikings Bjarne Nikolai Huus and Anders Berntsen Mol of Norway

Anders Berntsen Mol/Bjarne Nikolai Huus (NOR) set the scene with two clear wins against Mads Rosager/Kristoffer Abell (DEN) and Robin Seidl/Philipp Waller (AUT) in Pool C. In addition, Peng Gao/Yang Li (CHN) lost against the Austrians and Rosager/Abell (DEN) against the Chinese team.

Martin Ermacora/Moritz Pristauz (AUT) had impressive wins against both Florian Schnetzer/Daniel Müllner (AUT) and Danijel Pokeršnik/Tadej Bozenk (SLO) with 2-0. Andreas Takvam/Christian Sandlie Sørum (NOR) then won against Pokeršnik/Bozenk in their second match. In the remaining match of the pool, Schnetzer/Müllner won against Takvam/Sørum 2-0.

Round of 12


In the intermediate round, Friedl/Strauss (AUT) played against Ishitsubo/Shiba (JPN). With 21-16, 21-20 the Austrians secured their place in the quarterfinals. Ozolina/Caica (LAT), Kotzan/Klinke (GER) and Makhno/Makhno (UKR) also made it to the quarterfinals. In the men’s tournament, Seidl/Waller (AUT) played against the Norwegians Andreas Takvam/Christian Sandlie Sørum. In an exciting but balanced first set, the Norwegians emerged victorious 21-18. In a less dramatic second set, the Scandinavians stamped another 21-18 win and secured their place in the next round, as Seidl and Waller finished the competition in ninth place. In the last match of the day on centre court, Schnetzer/Müllner played against the Brazilians Márcio Gaudie/Arthur with the South Americans winning the first set, 21-17. The second set was a close affair, setting the scene for an exciting and dramatic ‘money time’ with millimetre decisions and big discussions, eventually ending 24-22 for Brazil. Schnetzer/Müllner finished the competition in ninth place as well. On the side court, Murat Giginoglu/Volkan Gögtepe of Turkey lost against the Chinese team Peng Gao/Yang Li 1-2 (18-21, 21-14, 22-24).
