Carolina Ferraris eager to continue her family’s success story
2017 CEV U20 Beach Volleyball European Championship

Vulcano, Italy, September 10, 2017. Italian rising star Carolina Ferraris wants to follow in mother Gisele and uncle Giovane Gávio’s big footsteps and bring the Brazilian passion for Beach Volleyball to Italy.

It was the biggest sensation of Day 3 at the #EuroBeachVolleyU20 in Vulcano: Dalila Varrassi and Carolina Ferraris from Italy, who teamed up just for the #EuroBeachVolleyU20, stunned everybody as they kicked out compatriots Claudia Scampoli/Anna Piccoli in the quarterfinals.

This exploit even surprised rising Beach Volleyball star Carolina Ferraris too. “Honestly, we did not have a lot of preparation for this tournament – and therefore, we did not want to set any specific goals. We had our first big training session together here in Vulcano. But the good results in our big debut makes me feel positive about our future,” Ferraris said.

“We did not have more time to prepare as I live in Rio de Janeiro. I am still going to high school and training with some players of the Brazilian national teams in Barra.”

However, this success should not surprise when one looks in Ferraris’s family history - because the 18-year-old has Beach Volleyball and Volleyball in her blood. Her mother Gisele Gávio made a name of herself in Italian club Volleyball with numerous titles celebrated with Foppadretti BERGAMO. Her uncle is no less than living Volleyball legend Giovane Gávio, who led Brazil to Olympic gold at Barcelona 1992 and Athens 2004 as well as to an FIVB Volleyball World Champs title in 2002 and has now taken over the U23 national team of the Volleyball giant.

“Of course, it is very special to have such big athletes in my family. I have learnt so much from both, my mother and my uncle,” explains Ferraris.

In Beach Volleyball, however, Ferraris wants to follow in the footsteps of somebody else. “My mother played Beach Volleyball in Italy too, but she was a different kind of player. In Beach Volleyball, in particular, it is Duda Lisboa, who inspires me. She is more or less the same size as me and she can read the game so well despite her young age. That is what I want to improve too.”

Despite the dual citizenship, however, Ferraris does not want to think about playing for Brazil. “I am training and living in Brazil at the moment, but I have always played for Italy – and I love representing my father’s country. I do not want to think about such things, I just want to grow as a player and earn my spurs in international Beach Volleyball.”

At the #EuroBeachVolleyU20 in Vulcano, the rising star had a chance to shine at her first-ever international tournament. Ferraris is going to fight for bronze at 12:10 (local time).
