Europe’s rising stars put on huge show on black beaches of Vulcano
2017 CEV U20 Beach Volleyball European Championship

Vulcano, Italy, September 8, 2017. Day 2 of the 2017 #EuroBeachVolleyU20 delivered big upsets, breath-taking rallies, and Beach Volleyball at its finest on Vulcano as 24 teams per gender remain in contention for the much-desired continental crown.

There was no room for mistakes as all of the 32 men’s and 32 women’s participating teams needed victories if they wanted to remain in the race for the #EuroBeachVolleyU20 crown on Vulcano. The rising stars of European Beach Volleyball gave everything on the black beaches of the tourist magnet to get a spot in the single elimination stage.

The Beach Volleyball fans that made it to Vulcano could enjoy Beach Volleyball at its finest and witness some big sensations, as some of the underdogs were able to accomplish quite a feat in their last pool games. So did for example Astrid Elisabeth Mellmølle/Clara Windeleff of Denmark, Maria Klepkou/Dionysia Matiou of Greece, Agnieska Paskevic/Jekaterina Kovalskaja from Lithuania, and Spela Morgan/Tajda Lovsin of Slovenia, who caused big upsets by winning their pools and consequently progressed straight to the Round of 16.

Furthermore, last year’s ninth placed Zoé Vergé-Dépré – sister of Swiss Beach Volleyball star Anouk Vergé-Dépré – together with team-mate Esmée Böbner as well as Austria’s Ronja Klinger and Victoria Deisl claimed the top spot of their pools to come a big step closer to their first-ever international podium finish as they made the Round of 16 as well.

In the men’s competition, there were big upsets too. The alleged underdogs Jacob Stein Brinck/Rasmus Mikelsons of Denmark, Timothée Platre/Théo Faure of France, and Alejandro Huerta/Oscar Jiménez of Spain proved that everything is possible at the #EuroBeachVolleyU20 by topping their pools.

For the local Beach Volleyball fans too, Day 2 had big news since the future stars of Italian Beach Volleyball were flying high on the black beaches of Vulcano as well. An impressive number of three men’s and three women’s teams made the elimination stage.

Both Italian top seeds, Manuel Alfieri/Mauro Sacripanti in the men’s and Reka Orsi Toth/Chiara They in the women’s competition, as well as Jakob Windisch/Paolo Cappio prevailed in their pools to secure a spot in the Round of 16. Samuele Cottafava/Marco Maletti, Claudia Scampoli/Anna Piccoli and Dalila Varrassi/Carolina Ferraris are all going to compete in the Round of 24.

On Saturday morning, the men’s and women’s teams are heading into the single elimination stage. The women are to launch Day 3 of the #EuroBeachVolleyU20 at 8:30 local time with their Round of 24 matches.

The big highlight of the day will be the quarterfinals to be played in the evening.

All Centre Court games of the #EuroBeachVolleyU20 in Vulcano will be broadcasted live on LAOLA1.tv.
