Dutch youngsters take top spots at Youth Continental Cup qualifier in Siófok
2017-2018 CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

Siófok, Hungary, July 16, 2017. Teams from the Netherlands emerged on top of the standing at the CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup qualifier – Pool G, which ended on Sunday in Siófok. The young Dutch players took first place in the boys’ as well as in the girls’ competition, with Hungary and Poland taking the respective runner-up spots and as a result, a ticket to next year’s Finals as well.

In the girls’ competition, Poland beat Serbia in the Playoff to secure their spot in the final stage of the CEV Youth Continental Cup. The players from Poland had routed their opponents from Serbia earlier in the tournament as well – and again they rallied to a comprehensive 2-0 victory. After this, Patrycja Jundzill and Julia Gierczynska played Emi van Driel and Raïsa Schoon of the Netherlands for top spot in the pool. The Dutch girls finished the tournament with a perfect record after beating Jundzill/Gierczynska 2-0 (21-13, 21-18) to remain in contention for a spot to compete at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

There was something to celebrate for the host nation in the boys’ competition where Artur Hajos and Bence Attila Stréli claimed an all-important 21-19, 21-19 victory over Nikola Vujovic and Jovan Vukmirovic of Serbia to secure at least second place in the pool and with it a spot in the Continental Cup Finals. This way, Hajos and Stréli made amends for a dramatic 1-2 loss they had suffered to the Serbian team on Saturday.

Although a loud home crowd pushed Hajos and Stréli later in the day, the Hungarians could not pose a real threat to Noah Aerts and Yorick de Groot of the Netherlands who rallied to a 21-14, 21-16 victory to claim first place in the pool. Next year, the Netherlands and Hungary will contest the Continental Cup Finals where five tickets per gender to the Youth Olympics will be at stake.
