Behrens and Glenzke add another gold medal to Germany’s tally
2016 CEV Satellite - Skopje

Skopje, Former Y.R. of Macedonia, September 4, 2016. On Sunday Germany’s Kim Behrens and Nadja Glenzke claimed their second CEV Satellite crown of the 2016 season following their 23-21, 21-13 victory over Nadine and Teresa Strauss of Austria in the final match of the event contested in Skopje.

The Austrians could keep the pace of their opponents only in the opening set before the Germans dominated the second to net another gold medal – as they had done earlier this summer at another CEV Satellite held in Timisoara, Romania. The eventual winners were awarded by the Vice Mayor of the City of Skopje, Mr Borche Georgievski. Nadine and Teresa Strauss received the silver medals from the Vice President of the Volleyball Federation of the Former Y.R. of Macedonia, Mr Ivica Hadziiljoski.

Finland’s Niina Ahtiainen and Ida Sinisalo settled for the bronze medal after edging Serbia’s Milena Matic and Marija Milosevic 25-23, 17-21, 19-17 at the end of a marathon match. The bronze medal winners were awarded by Mr Lambro Patche, representative of one of the tournament’s main sponsors, the ‘Skopje’ Brewery.

Earlier in the day Nadine and Teresa Strauss opened the programme of the semis edging top-seeded Matic and Milosevic 2-1 (21-19, 18-21, 15-7). The Serbian players claimed a comfortable 17-11 lead in the opening set but they ended up losing it 21-19; they stormed back strong in the second but the Austrian twins were able to keep cool and showed resilience and composure to secure a spot in the gold medal match.

In the other semi-final, Kim Behrens and Nadja Glenzke left no chance to Finland’s sensation Ida Sinisalo and Niina Ahtiainen cruising to a comfortable 2-0 win (21-15, 21-15).

The CEV Satellite in Skopje was crowned with success – a crowd of more than 600 attended the final matches on Sunday night at the venue set up by the Vardar River, with a DJ and other entertainment activities contributing to the right, festive atmosphere. TV coverage of the tournament was provided by national broadcaster MRT.

As he awarded the eventual winners and officially closed the tournament, the Vice Mayor of Skopje, Mr Georgievski, announced that the Macedonian capital is planning to further promote the organisation of Beach Volleyball tournaments in town and at the same time to improve the infrastructure currently available as Skopje has the potential to do more and raise the event to the next level.
