Young Finns and Austrians through to semis in Skopje
2016 CEV Satellite - Skopje

Skopje, Former Y.R. of Macedonia, September 3, 2016. Finland’s Ida Sinisalo/Niina Ahtiainen and Austrian twins Nadine and Teresa Strauss are the major surprises of the CEV Satellite in Skopje. On Saturday these two teams progressed to the semis together with Germany’s Kim Behrens/Nadja Glenzke – winners of the CEV Satellite in Timisoara earlier this summer – and Serbia’s top-seeded Marija Milosevic and Marina Matic.

Sinisalo and Ahtiainen first routed Ukraine’s twins Inna and Iryna Makhno 21-17, 21-16 to try to work their way to the semis through the losers’ bracket. Later in the day they caused another little sensation by taking their revenge from Turkey’s Merve Nezir and Esra Betul Cetin. After losing to the Turks in Round 1 on Friday, Sinisalo and Ahtiainen stamped a 21-16, 21-14 win to advance to the semis.

The Strauss twins emerged victorious from an Austrian derby with Cornelia Rimser and Valerie Teufl which they claimed by 2-1 (19-21, 21-18, 15-13) to contribute to one of the most dramatic and intense matches of the tournament so far. Earlier in the day Rimser and Teufl had won another all-Austrian affair recording a 2-1 (21-14, 18-21, 15-9) win over their countrywomen Eva Freiberger and Elisabeth Klopf.
