02/09/2016 16:50 German teams rule as women’s pool play comes to an end at Jurmala Masters 2016 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship - Jurmala Masters Jurmala, Latvia, September 2, 2016. As many as 24 matches per gender were played on Friday to start and finish on one and the same day the pool phase of the CEV Jurmala Masters. The 16 teams competing in the Main Draw were divided into four pools to contest three matches each on Majori beach under ideal weather conditions in Latvia’s ‘summer capital’. The eventual pool winners secured a spot in the quarter-finals scheduled for Saturday while the runners-up and third-placed from each group will resume their campaign with the first round of the knock-out phase. Germany cemented their status of Beach Volleyball powerhouse with three of their teams claiming first place in the final standing of their respective pool. Top-seeded Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude (pictured) did not drop a set in their pool matches where they were not seriously challenged by any of their opponents. The winners of this year’s Porec Major Series and bronze medallists from last week’s FIVB Grand Slam in Long Beach seem to be the heavy favourites for the title that will be at stake on Sunday – and with it also for a quota spot to the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Vienna. Joy Stubbe/Jolien Sinnema of the Netherlands and Germany’s Katharina Culav/Sandra Seyfferth also progressed to the elimination phase while Austrians Katharina Schützenhöfer/Lena Plesiutschnig have to pack their bags after three straight losses in the pool. The race for the leadership in Pool B was a much closer one with three teams finishing the day on a 2-1 win-loss record. Germany’s Victoria Bieneck/Julia Grossner claimed first place by means of their set point ratio, thus progressing straight to the quarter-finals. Kristyna Kolocova and Michala Kvapilova of the Czech Republic and Russia’s Daria Rudykh/Olga Motrich finished second and third respectively. Agnese Caica and 2015 U18 European champion Paula Neciporuka of Latvia lost all of their three matches to miss out on a spot in the next round. Teresa Mersmann/Isabel Schneider started their journey in Jurmala from the qualification round contested on Thursday but the gold medal winners from this year’s CEV Satellite in Ankara swept three matches in a row to secure Germany’s third spot in the quarter-finals. They actually emulated their much more decorated countrywomen Laboureur/Sude by not losing a set in three matches – including in their clash with Ukraine’s rising stars Valentyna Davidova and Ievgeniia Shchypkova who finished second in Pool C. 2016 U22 European champions Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka were rightfully awarded by Latvian Volleyball Federation President Atis Sausnitis before the home crowd for the historic feat they achieved last Sunday in Thessaloniki but there was more to celebrate for the Latvian golden girls as they advanced to the elimination phase of the Jurmala Masters after comfortably claiming their matchup with Alexandra Jupiter and Aline Chamereau of France (21-15, 21-16) before losing only at the tie-break to Davidova and Shchypkova. Graudina/Kravcenoka are not the only Latvian team still ‘alive’ in the women’s competition. As pool play came to a close on Friday afternoon, Latvia’s national champions Marta Ozolina and Alise Lece lost a ‘Baltic derby’ to Ieva Dumbauskaite and Irina Zobnina of Lithuania. Ozolina and Lece set the pace in the early stages of the tie-break but they ended up trailing 12-8 before attempting a late comeback which was not crowned with success. Still, Ozolina and Lece finished third in Pool D – the only one not to feature a German team. Taru Lahti and Anniina Parkkinen of Finland finished first in the group to progress to the quarter-finals. Ozolina/Lece are joined in the first stage of the elimination phase by Russia’s pool runners-up Ksenia Dabizha and Yulia Abalakina.
