Belgium through to Continental Cup Finals, Israelis still fighting for it
2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup - Men & Women
Ashdod, Israel, September 12, 2015. Belgium’s men emulated their countrywomen who last week had caused a sensation in Vilnius by topping the charts of their Round 4 Pool to claim a spot in the final stage of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup. The ‘Red Dragons on sand’ achieved the same feat on Saturday as Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle upset local heroes Sean Faiga and Ariel Hilman of Israel to claim the decisive ‘golden match’ (21-17, 21-13) in the contest opposing Belgium to the teams of the host country.
Israel’s men still have a chance to move on to the Continental Cup Finals and will be trying to use it later on Saturday afternoon when they play the winners of the clash featuring Estonia and Portugal.
However, the audience in Ashdod got something to celebrate already on Saturday morning as the Israeli women caused a sensation by cruising to two straight wins in their matches with Norway to get the right to challenge Slovakia in the contest for second place whose eventual winners will join Poland in the women’s Continental Cup Finals. Aliona Cherkez and Einav Muharer beat the much more experienced Janne Kongshavn and Victoria Faye Kjølberg in two sets (21-19, 21-18) and Yael Yellin/Jennifer Guz secured Israel’s second point with their victory over Cindy Treland and Janne Pedersen (21-15, 12-21, 15-12).
“We came to this match very well prepared and from the very beginning we believed that we could cause a sensation,” Aliona Cherkez commented. “And yes, in the end we did it! We will now start our preparations for the next round of matches with Slovakia.”
