Cyprus embraces Continental Cup
2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup - Men & Women
Limassol, Cyprus, May 8, 2015. Something that in the past looked impossible is now a reality. Cyprus may be a small country but this does not prevent this Mediterranean island from hosting an Olympic qualifying event, and namely the matches on schedule this coming weekend for Pool G in the 3rd Round of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.

The port city of Limassol will be at the centre of attention this weekend as was said earlier today at the press conference held before the start of the games on Saturday, which was more like a ‘Come watch the games and support us’ message from the Cyprus team members and coaching staff to the public.
In the men’s competition, Cyprus will compete with Finland, Israel and the Netherlands, whose team includes 2013 world champions Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen, while in the women’s division the opponents for the home team come from Finland, the Netherlands and Latvia.
“We are playing on home soil, so all Cypriots must come and cheer us on,” said Manolis Roumeliotis, the coach of the Cypriot team. “The fact that we are the underdogs is better for us, as our players will play without any pressure. Competing against better opponents will enable us to gain valuable experience for the future tournaments we will be taking part in.”
Mariota Angelopoulou, representing Cyprus in the women’s competition, spoke similarly: “With the crowd’s help our chances of achieving good results will be greater”, while Dimitris Apostolou, representing the men, said “We have nothing to lose, and we will try our best to honour our country’s colours”.
