Turkey vs. England 2:1

Turkey started their quest for a spot in the finals of the Continental Cup playing England and with Volkan Gögtepe/Murat Giginoglu securing a first point with their 21-15, 21-17 win over Philip Smith and Gregg Weaver. England’s top team Jake Sheaf and Chris Gregory responded by edging Selcuk Sekerci and Hasan Huseyin Mermer 21-19, 21-18 and so the winner of this tie was to be decided at the ‘golden match’. Once again Volkan Gögtepe (pictured) and Murat Giginoglu performed strong and with their 21-16, 15-21, 15-10 win over Sheaf/Gregory they secured a spot in the first-place final for Turkey.

Murat Giginoglu stressed that both teams performed well in the ‘golden match’ and deserved to seize the day: “England played really good and it was a challenging game but we managed to record an important victory for us in the tournament. I look forward to playing the finals against Latvia tomorrow. I would like to thank my partner Volkan for his contribution to today’s wins and we are evidently both happy with the results we claimed.”

His partner Volkan Gögtepe added: “I believe that the last one was a really good match. England have formed a really strong team and they were well prepared, but we also were ready for this fight and we are happy with winning today’s games. Now we are in the finals. I look forward to the matches tomorrow with Latvia. Our goal is to be able to compete at the Rio Olympics.”

Latvia vs. Croatia 2:0

Latvia had no problems at all in their semi with Croatia. 2012 Olympic bronze medallists Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins played together for the first time since a couple of years and they easily recorded a 21-11, 21-17 win over Niksa Dell’Orco and Ivan Djordjevic.
