2014 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite Antalya

Antalya, Turkey, May 6, 2014. The countdown to the start of the 2014 CEV Satellite in Antalya is almost over after the usual Technical Meeting was held on the eve of the first competition day at Kremlin Palace Hotel in Turkey’s most popular seaside resort. The meeting was chaired by CEV Technical Supervisor Joep van Iersel (NED) and attended by CEV Referee Delegate David Cox (NOR), Tournament Director Oguz Degirmenci, as well as by Competition Director Emel Öztürk and Promoter Güsel Yesiltas.

Mr. van Iersel addressed the players by recapping the main facts and figures of the tournament and then proceeded to the Drawing of Lots in order to seed teams sharing the same number of ranking points. Mr. Degirmenci then expressed his pride as Antalya is hosting a CEV Satellite for the second consecutive year and this time elite players from all over Europe have travelled to the city in order to participate in the tournament. The CEV Satellite will feature 32 teams per gender in the Main Draw whose grid will be filled up on Wednesday upon completion of the qualification.
Mr. Öztürk then expressed his happiness with the high-level organisation of the tournament and the high profile of the players who are set to compete this week in Antalya.
CEV Referee Delegate David Cox recalled the rules that will be tested throughout this week (click here for more information) and reviewed the schedule for the upcoming days.

The entry lists of the CEV Satellite in Antalya are topped by Austria’s Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst, with Doppler coming back after suffering a serious injury at last year’s European Championship Final in Klagenfurt. Latvia’s Olympic bronze medallist Martins Plavins is also among the main contenders for a spot on the podium together with his new partner Aleksandrs Solovejs.
The women’s entry lists are headed by Germany’s Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grossner but a couple of up-and-coming teams will have to be followed very closely, namely Lithuania’s rising stars Monika Povilaityte and Ieva Dumbauskaite and last year’s U18 European champions Daria Rudykh and Nadezhda Makroguzova from Russia.
