Russian youngsters vie for ticket to Continental Cup finals on last day of Moscow Grand Slam
CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup - Zonal Phase
Moscow, Russia, August 25, 2013. On the last day of the FIVB Grand Slam in Moscow the inaugural CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup will also stop at Vodniy stadium as teams from 5 countries embark on their quest to make it to the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. The format of this competition is very much similar to the Continental Cup whereby two teams eventually qualified for last year’s Olympics in London and whose final stage – for women’s teams – was also held in Moscow at Poklonnaya Gora.
Teams from Russia, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, and Israel all found their way to Moscow already on Friday with the host country being represented in the girls’ tournament by Daria Rudykh and Nadezhda Makroguzova (pictured) who had starred in the Main Draw of the Grand Slam earlier this week. “We feel honored to represent our country in the inaugural Continental Cup” Makroguzova says. “We recently got the right to participate in the Grand Slam, so this will be the icing on the cake of an already memorable week. I think that the experience we got from the Grand Slam will help us move forward in the competition and to achieve our goal to qualify for the Youth Olympics. Any Olympics is the dream of every athlete, even if this is “only” the Youth Olympics” she adds.
“I think that the decision to hold this tournament here was just brilliant” CEV Technical Supervisor Anton Fichtinger says. “The infrastructure is ready as there is a great venue set up here for the FIVB Grand Slam. As the FIVB tournament draws to a close, I am sure that the Continental Cup will be a great competition too”.
