30/06/2013 23:00 Alexander Walkenhorst claims second gold at Lausanne Satellite 2013 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Lausanne Lausanne, Switzerland, June 30, 2013. The CEV Satellite tournament in Lausanne came to a close on Sunday with Germany’s Alexander Walkenhorst standing on top of the podium for the second time there at Ouchy. After winning the event in 2011 together with his former partner Thomas Kaczmarek, this time Walkenhorst – standing at 206 cm the tallest player competing in Lausanne – teamed up with Lars Flüggen to claim gold after edging Robert Kufa and Jan Hadrava of the Czech Republic in the final match (19-21, 25-23, and 15-10). The home heroes Mirco Gerson and Alexei Prawdzic could be happy with their bronze medal after seeing off Norway’s Morten Kvamsdal and Oivind Hordvik in the “small final” (21-15, 21-19). The last day of the CEV Satellite tournament was blessed with sun and perfect weather conditions thereby gathering a large crowd at Place de la Navigation for the semis and finals. In the very last act of the tournament, Kufa and Hadrava – winners of the CEV Satellite in Montpellier some weeks ago – could not capitalize on two match balls in the second set and eventually lost the tie-break to Walkenhorst and Flüggen. “It just feels great to come back here and win the tournament once more” Walkenhorst says. “I am particularly proud of my partner for Lars had never made it to the Main Draw of such a tournament. I will return to Lausanne next year hoping to go for the hat-trick”. Gerson and Prawdzic finished their home campaign with a bronze medal that rewards the quality and consistency they have displayed throughout the weekend. This is the second bronze medal in Lausanne for Gerson who last year had finished third with former partner Philip Gabathuler. Home hero Sébastien Chevallier had to be content with fifth place after his partner Mats Kovatsch had to pull out shortly before the start of the competition due to injury. Chevallier teamed up with Rafael Bissig who did his best to stand the challenge but could not help “Séba” keep his status as Switzerland’s best Beach Volleyball player right now. Chevallier and Kovatsch confirmed Sunday night that they will travel to Stare Jablonki and carry there the Swiss hopes at the upcoming FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship.
