CEV Beach Volleyball Challenger & Satellites

Umag, Croatia, June 13, 2012. The inaugural CEV Satellite tournament in Umag got started on Wednesday there on the shores of the Adriatic Sea with the Country Quota matches whereby a total of 7 teams were trying to find their way to the qualification round scheduled for Thursday. Even though the weather forecasts were not that promising and everyone was expecting showers in Umag, the first day of action was accompanied by perfect conditions.
The program was opened by the Swiss derby whereby Rafael Bissig and Bernhard Beyeler got past their compatriots Andreas and Roman Sutter in straight sets after 37 minutes of play (21-15, 21-17). Bissig/Beyeler eventually advanced to the qualification round at the end of the day after claiming a second derby, this time edging Gabriel Kissling/Jan Schnider 2:1 (14-21, 21-15, and 15-11).

Florian Schnetzer/Tobias Koraimann of Austria also needed three sets to beat their countrymen Fabian Kandolf/Christoph Dressler (21-11, 20-22, and 17-15). The last country quota saw Zlatan Yordanov and Ivan Kolev of Bulgaria power past their compatriots Teodor Marinov/Ivan Latunov with the score of 2:1, storming back from one set down (19-21, 21-18, and 15-13).

Twenty-four teams will join on Thursday the qualification round that will assign the 8 spots still at stake to advance to the Main Draw of this CEV Satellite that follows up on a memorable edition of the FIVB Youth World Championship that took place last year in Umag. Croatia will be represented in the Main Draw by three teams, including the duo Mario Boras/Ivan Zeljkovic that has received one of the wild-cards attributed by the CEV.
