After memorable Youth World Champs elite Beach Volleyball returns to Umag
CEV Beach Volleyball Challenger & Satellites
Umag, Croatia, June 13, 2012. After playing host to last year’s FIVB Youth World Championship, Umag, one of Croatia’s most popular seaside resorts, is back under the spotlight as this week a CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite tournament will take place there. A great location, combined with perfect weather conditions and an impressive starting field, are the right pre-conditions for a great Beach Volleyball festival on the shores of the Adriatic Sea.
After the Country Quota matches scheduled for today and the qualification following on Thursday, the matches of the Main Draw are set to unfold starting from Friday with 24 teams that will be vying for international glory as well as valuable ranking points. Teams from 21 countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey and Ukraine) have applied to join this tournament where a total of 6 duos (i.e. Boras/Zeljkovic, Dellorco/Krizanovic, Gracin/Djordjevic, Mudrovcic/Ravnjak, Peric/Nojic and Zhukovski/Zhukovski) will be representing the hosting nation.
Beach Volleyball has quite a long tradition in Croatia; the local promoter of this Satellite, the agency MPG, and the Croatian Volleyball Association got many compliments for the stellar work they delivered while hosting last year’s Youth World Championship in Umag. With the support of the local municipality, the Umag Tourist Board as well as of Istraturist, the city got the right to host this Satellite tournament. Everyone there strongly believes in the value of Beach Volleyball events to draw additional attention to Umag, so the city council has financed the set-up of two permanent courts, with two more being “sponsored” by Istraturist, thereby providing all players, together with first-class accommodation and other excellent infrastructure, with ideal conditions to train and play Beach Volleyball all year round.
