Grid of Main Draw is completed in Baden
2012 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship
Baden, Austria, May 24, 2012. A total of 12 teams advanced on Thursday to the Main Draw of the CEV Baden Masters and Satellite after a long day came to a close with the Austrian duos Hupfer/Leeb and Teufl/Kopf eventually missing out on the next stage of the event.
Teams from Belarus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Ukraine got the right to play the Main Draw in the CEV Men’s Satellite there at Strandbad Baden after they clipped a couple of wins in the two rounds the qualification was subdivided into.
As for the women’s competition, whose status is even higher as the tournament is a Masters and hence part of the 2012 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship, the Czech Republic, Slovakia plus Germany and Switzerland all qualified teams for the Main Draw. Martina Bonnerova and Barbora Hermannova got the right to play in the Main Draw after edging with a double 21-18 their Slovak neighbors, i.e. Lucia Michalovicova and Lucia Cizmarova. Germany’s Victoria Bieneck/Julia Grossner also made it to the Main Draw as they cruised past Slovenia’s Andreja Vodeb/Simona Fabjan in the second round of the qualification with the last couple of tickets going to Slovakia’s Natalia Dubovcova/Dominika Nestarcova and to the Swiss tandem composed by Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Isabelle Forrer who also got past their respective opponents in straight sets.
The Main Draw is set to start on Friday at 9 am and will be highlighted by the home heroines, Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger. Austrian duos are considered the pre-favorites also of the men’s event although the starting field includes quite many outsiders that may create a sensation already in the first rounds of action.
