2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Baden

Baden, Austria, June 9, 2016. The country quota matches scheduled for Wednesday were cancelled and that’s why the CEV Satellite Baden started Thursday with the qualification round. 24 men’s and 16 women’s teams fought for a spot in the Main Draw of the competition being held in the outskirts of Vienna.

Cornelia Rimser/Katharina Almer (pictured) were the first Austrian team to perform on home sand. After a close first set against Slovenia’s Nina Lovsin/Sara Sakovic, the locals got better and better and managed to move on to the second qualification round following a 21-19, 21-16 victory. In the decisive game against Adriana-Maria Matei/Beata Vaida of Romania, Rimser/Almer were leading until the very end of the first set. However, the Romanians had the better finish and won the set 21-19. Still the Austrians turned the game around by winning the second and third sets by 21-14 and 15-13, thereby progressing to Friday’s Main Draw.

Austria’s youngsters Marilena Preiml/Sophie Weber showed their potential in the their first ever international tournament. After leading by five points in the first set against Italians Agata Zuccarelli/Monica Lestini, the visitors fought back and managed to win the first set. Unfortunately, Agata Zuccarelli injured her knee badly in the final moments of a very close second set – and had to forfeit. In the decisive game Preiml/Weber faced Nika Daalderop/Joy Stubbe of the Netherlands. The young Austrians had no chance against their Dutch opponents, who are the reigning U20 European champions, losing 12-21 and 9-21 but they still were happy with what they had achieved in the tournament.

After a long day and two qualification rounds, two more female teams qualified for the Main Draw, namely France’s Ophélie Lusson/Aline Chamereau and Germany’s Kim Behrens/Nadine Glenzke.

On the men’s side, Martin Ermacora and Moritz Pristauz-Telsnigg had a bye in the first round. In the decisive second round the young locals faced Swiss youngsters Adrian Heidrich and Gabriel Kissling and showed what they are capable of. After a very close game they managed to progress to the Main Draw by winning the match 21-19, 21-18.

The seven other qualified teams are: Ukraine’s Iaroslav Gordieiev/Mykola Babich, England’s Jake Sheaf/Chris Gregory, Spain’s Francisco Tomas/Cesar Menendez, Switzerland’s Marco Krattiger/Jonas Kissiling, Germany’s Yannick Harms/David Poniewaz, Israel’s Sean Faiga/Ariel Hilman and Aliaksandr Kavalenka/Aliaksandr Dziadkou of Belarus.
