Main draw starts with couple of sensations at Timisoara Satellite
2015 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Timisoara
Timisoara, Romania, August 14, 2015. The main draw of the inaugural CEV Satellite tournament taking place in Timisoara started on Friday with the first set of matches. The fans could hardly wait for the debut of the Romanian teams and the opening day of the main draw provided even a couple of Romanian derbies to enjoy for the audience.
Ioana-Alexandra Ordean and Florina Morariu lost two matches in a row, first to Switzerland’s Nina Betschart and Nicole Eiholzer, the gold medallists from the Baku 2015 European Games (13-21, 17-21), and after that also the derby with Andreea-Maria Barsasteanu/Beatrice Galit (17-21, 11-21). Betschart/Eiholzer, on the other hand, continued their display of fine form as they claimed also their second match on Friday edging another Romanian team, Adriana Melniciuc and Adelina Budai-Ungureanu in two sets (21-15, 21-13) to move on straight to Round 3 and play there Russia’s Olga Motrich and Nadezhda Makroguzova. Melniucic/Budai-Ungureanu will try to continue their home campaign on Saturday taking on Israel’s Yael Yellin/Jennifer Guz.
The major surprise of the day came in the afternoon when top seeds Sandra Seyfferth and Anni Schumacher of Germany (pictured) lost to Russia’s Motrich/Makroguzova (14-21, 17-21).
At the end of the day, the youngest player in the tournament, 13-year old Florina Morariu, said: “The competition is very tough. I was hoping to play better in our second match and I did my best there. Now that our campaign has ended, I wish good luck to my Romanian countrywomen and to all other teams who are still in the tournament.”
