Yellin/Guz write history in Timisoara for Israel’s Beach Volleyball family by making main draw of CEV Satellite
2015 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Timisoara
Timisoara, Romania, August 13, 2015. The actions continued on Thursday at the inaugural CEV Satellite in Timisoara thereby determining the eight teams moving on to the main draw of the tournament taking place in Romania’s third-largest city. Thursday’s programme included seven matches from the qualification round after Spain’s Ester Ribera Boter and Amaranta Fernandez Navarro got a bye to move on straight to the main draw.
Israel’s Yael Yellin and Jennifer Guz claimed a fairly surprising win over Ukraine’s twins Inna and Iryna Makhno. The Israelis cashed the first set by 21-17, but they ended up losing the second by 16-21. The third and last set eventually went to Yellin and Guz (15-13) who this way made the main draw of a CEV tournament for the first time in their career, marking an unprecedented feat for an Israeli female pair.
“I think that we played very well in our match against the Ukrainians and we did stick to our game plan,” Jennifer Guz said. “We also kept calm throughout the whole match and I think that this made the difference in the end.”
“We are very happy with winning this game and especially by becoming the first women’s team from Israel to make the main draw of a CEV Satellite. We are hoping to play even better in the next games, showing patience and, why not, we are going for more good results in this tournament,” said partner Yael Yellin.
One of the most interesting matches was provided by teams from the Czech Republic and Russia. Russia’s Olga Motrich and former U18 European champion Nadezhda Makroguzova claimed the first set of their match with Karolina Rehackova and Magdalena Dostalova by 21-19; the match was very close and even though the Czech players went up by as many as four points in the second set, Motrich and Makroguzova levelled the score at 18 and after that scored another three points to secure their ticket to the main draw.
“We got the upper hand and played better because we were more concentrated,” Motrich explained. “In the first set we did not know how to play, what to do exactly because we did not know them so well; however, in the second set we fought hard and performed better. Our goal here in Timisoara is to win a medal,” she added.
Other teams to make the main draw are Czechs Nicole Dostalova/Katerina Valkova, Turkey’s Merve Nezir/Esra Betul Cetin, Bulgaria’s Asya Dinova/Slavina Koleva and Diana Malinova/Rusena Slancheva and Germany’s Katarina Schillerwein/Cinja Tillmann who on Wednesday had recorded two wins in country quota matches with other German duos.
The main draw will start on Friday morning at 9am. All matches are streamed live and for free at LAOLA1.tv
