Germany’s Mersmann/Schneider prevent Russian win at CEV Satellite in Molodechno
2015 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Molodechno
Molodechno, Belarus, June 13, 2015. Germany’s Teresa Mersmann and Isabel Schneider claimed on Saturday the gold medal at the CEV Satellite tournament held in the Belarusian city of Molodechno. They achieved this feat after edging Russia’s Yulia Abalakina and Ksenia Dabizha in the final by 2:1 (19-21, 21-12, 15-12).
Though they had impressed in the previous stages of the tournament, the Russian players could not complete their triumphal march and repeat the success they had achieved some weeks ago in that same city as they had topped the charts of the season opener in the EEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour.
Actually the gold medal match had started in a perfect way for Abalakina and Dabizha who displayed their skills to lead from start to end in the opening set (21-19). Mersmann and Schneider started playing a lot better in the second set, doing so especially with their service and attack, this way comfortably cruising to the final 21-12. They continued the same way also in the tie-break that followed where they scored some important blocks and showed great actions also in defence to celebrate their first major international success in their still young partnership (15-12).
Germany claimed also the bronze medal as Anni Schumacher and Sandra Seyfferth – the first seeded pair of the tournament – had previously stamped a 21-16, 21-15 victory over Russian siblings Nadezhda and Ekaterina Makroguzova.
The awards ceremony that brought the tournament to an end was attended also by the Secretary General of the Volleyball Federation of the Republic of Belarus, Mr Sergej Danilov, and by the representative of the City of Molodechno, Mr Nikolai Shrimf.
