Draw of the first phase sets tone for exciting #EuroBeachVolleyU20
2015 CEV U20 Beach Volleyball European Championship
Larnaka, Cyprus, September 1, 2015. The all-awaited draw for the First Phase of the 2015 CEV U20 Beach Volleyball European Championship has just been made in Larnaka. There are some interesting ties as 32 teams per gender embark on their quest for glory with the competition reaching its climax on Saturday when the medals will be at stake. The teams topping the charts in their respective pool will get a ‘bye’ in the first round of the elimination phase.
Though this is an U20 European Championship, there are some players who can already boost impressive records, such as 2014 U18 European champion Julius Thole of Germany, Ukraine’s 2014 FIVB U19 World Championship silver medallists Oleh Plotnytskyi and Illia Kovalov as well as Switzerland’s Florian Breer/Yves Haussener who won gold at last year’s U17 World Championship in Mexico and only a few weeks ago finished third at the U18 European Championship in Riga, Latvia. Russia will count on Artem Yarzutkin, gold medallist at last year’s Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, who following the injury of his partner Oleg Stoyanovskiy, has teamed up with Maxim Sivolap, who last Sunday won bronze at the U22 competition in Portugal alongside Igor Velichko.

Last year’s U18 European champion Leonie Klinke of Germany headlines the women’s field together with 2014 U18 European bronze medallists Ida Sinisalo/Niina Ahtiainen of Finland. 2013 U18 European champion Nadezhda Makroguzova of Russia is also among the most decorated players in the competition together with Dunja Gerson of Switzerland who last year won bronze at the U22 European Championship in Turkey.
