Nonna Ismayilova, 71, from Baku is the oldest volunteer at the Beach Volleyball tournament of the Baku 2015 European Games but nevertheless she is definitely the most enthusiastic one. Nonna is a match scorer and she has been taking care of the score sheet for as many as eight matches a day. This is nothing,” she says. “And I really like it. You have to be very accurate and organised and I have been doing this for 44 years already.” She started to play Volleyball when she was 15 years old and played for seven years for the national selection of Azerbaijan. She stopped when her first child was born in 1969. And since 1996 she is a member of the Board of Administration at the Azerbaijan Volleyball Federation where she is responsible for youth programmes and match planning. “Volleyball is my life. I never get tired of it. I will never stop loving this sport,” she says. “I feel so proud that Azerbaijan got this opportunity to organise the European Games 2015 so that we can show to the whole world that we can host the Olympics at some point in the future.” “The organisation of the Baku 2015 European Games is a milestone also for the Azerbaijan Volleyball Federation. Beach Volleyball is a pretty ‘young’ sport in Azerbaijan and now after the Games it will gain even more attention and popularity,” Nonna says. Even though she retired some years ago from her job – she was a teacher at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy in Baku – she is still very much involved in the sport that has left an indelible mark on her life. “I work with the sports department of our university. I just cannot stop loving what I do. That is my desire and life,” she concludes.
