Top-seeded Bieneck and Grossner claim gold in Antalya
2014 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Antalya
Antalya, Turkey, May 10, 2014. Germany’s Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grossner lived up to their status of first-seeded team to win the women’s tournament of the CEV Satellite in Antalya. Bieneck and Grossner routed their compatriots Anna Behlen and Katharina Culav (3:0; 15-13, 15-6, 15-10) in the final match to top the final standing of the tournament held in Turkey’s most popular seaside resort. Finland’s twins Erika and Emilia Nyström – after withdrawing from their semifinal match earlier in the afternoon – got back on track to avoid a clean sweep of the medals by German teams as they beat Katarina Schillerwein and Cinja Tillmann in the bronze medal match (3:1; 15-13, 15-7, 12-15, 15-11).
Bieneck and Grossner did not lose a match throughout the tournament and after a relatively close first set they easily imposed their rule in the final with countrywomen Behlen and Culav.
“It was a very difficult tournament mainly because of the weather,” Grossner commented. “In the end we are very happy with this gold medal. We played well and did not lose any game. Our rivals in the final had performed a lot better in their previous matches.”
“I like playing in Turkey because I am always very successful here,” added partner Victoria Bieneck. “I seem to have a connection with this country. This time it was quite difficult to win the tournament as we had to adjust to a different scoring system as well as to changing weather conditions.”
The medalists of the tournament were awarded by the President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation, Özkan Mutlugil, and by Ms. Masha Bobrikova, representing the main sponsor of the CEV Satellite in Antalya, Komus.
