Antalya, Turkey, May 9, 2014. The second day of main draw play at the 2014 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite Antalya was shorter than expected. Because of the bad weather, the games started with a five-hour delay from the original schedule and some of Friday’s matches were postponed for Saturday.
Three German pairs are among the four undefeated teams in the women’s main draw that qualified for round 4 by winning their round 3 matches, all with straight-set victories. Joining them in the fight for two spots in the semifinals will be a duo from Austria.
The top-seeded Victoria Bieneck / Julia Grossner had a comfortable win against Elizaveta Sulima / Darya Udovenko from Ukraine by 3:0 (15-8, 15-7, 17-15) to face compatriots Katarina Schillerwein / Cinja Tillmann in the quarterfinal Round 4 rescheduled for the start of the day tomorrow. Schillerwein / Tillmann upset the Russian #4 seed Daria Rudykh / Nadezhda Makroguzova by 3:0 (15-9, 15-10, 15-11).
The other undefeated German team, Anna Behlen / Katharina Culav (GER), knocked out France’s Déborah Giaoui / Mathilde Giordano by 3:0 (15-12, 15-13, 15-5), while Austrians Katharina Schützenhöfer / Lena Plesiutschnig, seeded at #3, shut out Finland’s Riikka Lehtonen / Taru Lahti by 3:0 (15-10, 15-7, 18-16).
In addition to the four losing teams from round 3, still surviving in the losers’ bracket, which will determine the last two semifinalists, are the #2 seed Emilia Nyström / Erika Nyström from Finland, the #5 seed Ieva Dumbauskaite / Monika Povilaityte from Lithuania, the #7 seed Olga Motrich / Yulia Abalakina from Russia and Germany’s Jenny Heinemann / Anika Krebs, responsible for disappointing the home crowd by eliminating the last Turkish team standing - Burcu Atasoy / Izolda Körfez.
