Top-seeded Bieneck and Grossner off to flying start in Antalya
2014 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Antalya
Antalya, Turkey, May 8, 2014. Germany’s Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grossner lived up to their status as first-seeded team in the Main Draw of the CEV Satellite in Antalya by scoring two straight victories without dropping a set on Thursday. Bieneck and Grossner easily edged Iceland’s Berglind Jonsdottir/Elisabet Einarsdottir (15-4, 15-5, 15-10) before making their way straight to the third round by besting Poland’s Katarzyna Kociolek and Dorota Strag in straight sets as well (15-9, 15-8, 15-9).
Things did not work the same way for Finland’s Erika and Emilia Nyström, the team which comes next in the entry lists. The Finnish twins started their campaign in the Main Draw by routing Turkey’s Meliha Ismailoglu and Bahanur Sahin in straight sets (15-4, 15-5, 15-8) in only 28 minutes but after that they suffered a major setback as they lost by 0:3 (16-18, 19-21, 12-15) to Anna Behlen and Katharina Culav of Germany. The Nyströms then fought their way back claiming a 3:0 victory (15-8, 15-6, 15-9) in their first match of the losers’ bracket versus Karolina Rehackova and Marketa Bendikova of the Czech Republic. “The first game was very easy for us but the second got much harder,” said Emilia Nyström. “It was a very close match where we had our chances but we made a way too many mistakes. We played our best in our last match today and we got back on track.” “We love everything here but the weather,” added Erika, referring to the stormy and rainy conditions players had to cope with on Thursday.
As for the home teams, three out of four lost two consecutive matches and therefore their campaign has already come to an end. Burcu Atasoy and Izolda Körfez lost their first match of the day to Russia’s and U18 European champions Daria Rudykh and Nadezhda Makroguzova. After that, they bounced back beating Dutchwomen Annemieke Driesen and Ilke Meertens by 3:0 and Sweden’s Camilla Nilsson/Tadva Yoken by 3:1. On Friday morning they will continue their adventure taking on Germany’s Jenny Heidemann and Anika Krebs.
