Baku 2015 trains Azerbaijani sport officials as part of lasting legacy
2015 European Games
Baku, Azerbaijan, September 16, 2014. Beach Volleyball officials in Azerbaijan received training from international experts during the Baku Masters held at Heyat Rest Area from September 11 through 14 as part of the legacy of the Baku 2015 European Games.
Experienced International Technical Officials (ITOs) visited Baku to educate National Technical Officials (NTOs) ahead of next summer’s first European Games.
42 line scorers and judges received extensive training at a seminar lead by Mr Jeff Brehaut, FIVB Technical Supervisor and CEV Referee Delegate.
He said: “This was a wonderful opportunity to go through detailed theoretical preparations for Beach Volleyball, covering everything from pre-match preparations to scoring systems. There was also a day spent in practical matches which afforded an invaluable opportunity to practice line scoring and judging in a real-time environment. It was a very successful two-day seminar and I am confident in the abilities and know-how of the Azerbaijan NTOs as we prepare for the European Games.”
In total, more than 660 National Technical Officials and approximately 1,000 International Technical Officials are needed for Baku 2015. The officials will be required at all 20 sports of the Baku 2015 European Games to ensure the competition is run fairly and within the rules.
This year has already seen extensive and detailed workshops with Athletics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Taekwondo and Wrestling officials visiting to work with NTOs.
Pierce O’Callaghan, Director of Sport at Baku 2015, said: “The training that the NTOs are receiving is an extremely important part of the lasting human legacy of the Baku 2015 European Games. We want to ensure an increased level of professionalism in Azerbaijani sport after the European Games and this is the perfect opportunity to educate a new generation of technical officials. The officials that will be visiting Baku are amongst the best in the world and thanks to their assistance, we are confident that Baku 2015 will be a benchmark of excellence for future European Games.”
Before the Baku 2015 European Games begins, NTOs from all 20 sports at the Games will receive visits from qualified ITOs to improve their knowledge.
All of the NTOs are required to pass a written and oral exam at the end of their training to ensure high levels of professionalism are maintained.
