Baku Masters to provide perfect rehearsal for inaugural European Games
2014 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship - Baku Masters

Baku, Azerbaijan, September 8, 2014. The 2014 edition of the CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship will draw to a close this week with the inaugural Baku Masters scheduled for September 10-14. The tournament in Azerbaijan’s capital city follows on the first-round of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup that was held last June at the Heyat Rest Area and is also a perfect opportunity for the country to stage a rehearsal ahead of the European Games coming up in June 2015. Apart from FIVB/CEV Ranking Points and prize money there will be even more at stake since the winners of the men’s tournament and the gold and silver medallists of the women’s event will claim a spot for their respective countries in the 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship.

The host country will be represented by four teams – two per gender – that about a week ago performed strong at the second-round tournament of the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup held at Ada Ciganlija Lake in Belgrade, topping the charts there with a perfect run in all of their matches. The Baku Masters will take place right on the shores of the Caspian Sea where a splendid venue (see picture) is being set up at Heyat Rest Area. There will be three courts used for the competition and another two available for the warm-up.

There is a lot of excitement in Baku around the tournament as some of Europe’s best Beach Volleyball players are set to travel to the vibrant capital city of Azerbaijan. After the withdrawal of reigning European champions Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo, the entry lists are topped by Russia’s Ruslan Bykanov/Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Laura Ludwig/Anni Schumacher. Triple European champion Reinder Nummerdor is also among the players set to play in Baku, this time alongside Christiaan Varenhorst.

“This tournament is one of the toughest you can get to play in Europe,” says home heroine Zinaida Liubymova. “All teams are very strong so we have to be ready and prepare well. I hope that we can deliver a strong performance and we will do everything we can in order to achieve this goal,” she adds. The teams from Azerbaijan will be playing in their current composition for the first time before the home crowd in what is a perfect rehearsal for the 2015 European Games where Azerbaijan will be represented in the Beach Volleyball event by a maximum of two teams per gender.
