Doris Schwaiger shocked thousands of Beach Volleyball fans in Austria and across the globe as well when on Friday she announced she will retire from competitive sport right after the end of the CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship – Baden Masters. The 2013 European champion won’t therefore try to retain her title at next week’s Final in Cagliari, Italy. She announced her retirement at 29 years of age with tears dropping from her eyes: “It’s a feeling inside telling me that I can’t continue anymore,” she said. “Even my body is also warning me more and more often that time has come to finally stop.” However, the fact that she announced her retirement from the competitive arena by the time the 2014 season has just began sparked much surprise among the people in attendance. Doris Schwaiger steps away from the sport after winning gold at last year’s CEV European Championship in Klagenfurt and with a fifth place from the World Championship and Olympics on her resume as well. “The memories from the European Championship we played last year before our home fans will stay with me forever,” she said. The Baden Masters will be the last tournament in her career before she bids farewell to competitive sport. It is still unclear whether her sister Stefanie will continue playing or not. “I will end my career here in Baden. I want to enjoy the last tournament of my career to the end,” Doris said. “They say you should stop by the time you are on top. We have been playing for many years but recently I have struggled to find the motivation to continue. I have rejected this inner feeling for quite some time but now I have reached my ultimate threshold.” Doris Schwaiger looked back at last year’s triumph at Austria’s largest sandbox: “The real climax of my career is certainly the European Championship we played last year in Klagenfurt where we won gold before our home fans.
