Vaduz Satellite underway, women’s qualification completed
2014 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Vaduz

Vaduz, Liechtenstein, August 7, 2014. The 2014 edition of the CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite Vaduz got underway on Wednesday with the country quota matches and the women’s qualification round. Some 700 spectators found their way to the centre court set up in Vaduz downtown – the so-called Städtle – for the first day of the tournament that will continue all the way through to Sunday, August 10.

This year’s Vaduz Satellite has a lot to offer including the live streaming of all matches played on the centre court which is available on LAOLA1.tv On top of this, the use of the electronic score sheet is being tested as well.

The men’s competition got started with the country quota matches for Germany and Austria. Bennet and David Poniewaz – who finished fourth at this year’s U23 World Championship in Myslowice, Poland – edged out their countrymen Arne Bergmann and Malte Stiel (12-21, 21-19, 15-13) to progress to the qualification round.
Austria’s Tobias Winter and Lorenz Petutschnig, who have returned to Vaduz after making it to the final last year, had an easier job as they needed only two sets (21-10, 21-17) to ease past Florian Schnetzer and Michael Murauer.

Austria’s women’s top team Katharina Schützenhöfer and Lena Plesiutschnig emerged victorious from the qualification round where they had a bye first and then easily claimed their match with France’s Déborah Giaoui and Anastassia Koutchouk (21-15, 25-23). The other spots for the main draw were claimed by Italy’s Giada Benazzi/Giulia Toti, Finland’s Essi Hasu and Anniina Parkkinen, Spain’s Amaranta Fernandez Navarro/Ester Ribera Boter, Michelle Stiekema/Nienke de Waard and Jolien Sinnema/Joy Stubbe of the Netherlands, as well as Germany’s Katharina Schillerwein/Cinja Tillmann and Anna Behlen/Katharina Culav.

The start of the main draw on Thursday morning will also mark the debut of the home duos with Claudia Hasler/Petra Schifferle-Walser playing Finland’s Hasu/Parkkinen whereas Nina Ludwig/Ramona Kaiser will take on first-seeded Schützenhöfer/Plesiutschnig.

The CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite in Vaduz is also the place where candidate Beach Volleyball referees are receiving their training. The capital city of Liechtenstein is indeed playing host – for the eight consecutive year – to the only International Referee Candidates Course (IRCC) for Beach Volleyball scheduled by FIVB in 2014. The course is placed under the tutorship of FIVB Beach Volleyball Commissioner José Casanova and CEV Referee Delegate Geir Dahle. The IRCC is being attended by 17 candidate referees from 11 countries, aged 25 to 41. Upon completion of their theoretical classes, they are set to join the tournament to test their knowledge and application of the rules of the game.
