Rhodes welcomes CEV Youth Continental Cup
CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup - Zonal Phase
Rhodes, Greece, August 23, 2013. The island of Rhodes is set to host this Saturday and Sunday a Zonal Phase tournament of the inaugural CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup starring young players from Greece, Albania, Cyprus, and Ukraine. The winners and runner-ups of the competition will qualify for the final stage scheduled for next year where the top six will eventually get the right to compete at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.
Kalipateira Sports Complex will be the venue of this tournament after hosting – three years ago – a Sub-Zonal Phase tournament of the Continental Cup whereby two teams eventually qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. Greece will be represented by Myrsini Vakalopoulou and Tatiana Moldovanidi and Georgios Kampouris/Georgios Anastasiadis; Albania’s duos are Krist Martiro and Osman Qepa (boys) and Adelajda Bërboti/Medlina Shahini (girls). Cyprus will be represented by Charalampos Zorpis/Georgios Chrysostomou and Erika Zempyla/Zoi Konstantopoulou while pre-favorite Ukraine is set to line-up Alina Demydova/Darya Udovenko and Oleg Plotnytskiy/Dmytro Kanaiev.
“We are delighted to welcome back an international Beach Volleyball competition, a sport whose popularity is increasing in Rhodes” says Andreas Moskiou, President of the Local Committee in the Dodecanese.
“We expect good results and we hope both of our teams will make it to the final stage of the Youth Continental Cup” said Greece’s head coach Antonios Poumpouras.
“I am very happy to be here in Rhodes, a very beautiful island” said CEV Technical Supervisor Bruno Proietto of Italy while addressing the media on Friday. “I am sure that this event will turn into a great success and wish good luck to all participating teams”.
“We hope we can get the ticket to the final phase” stated home heroines Myrsini Vakalopoulou and Tatiana Moldovanidi. “We will face strong teams but we shall be brave and good enough to win the matches we need to make it to the finals” added their countrymen Georgios Kampouris and Georgios Anastasiadis.
