Cyprus boys excited after making Continental Cup finals
CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup - Zonal Phase

Nicosia, Cyprus, September 2, 2013. Cyprus is the sole “small country” whose athletes have qualified for the final stage of the inaugural CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup. Charalampos Zorpis and Georgios Chrysostomou did so some ten days ago as they finished in second place at the Zonal Phase tournament held in Rhodes where they upset local heroes Georgios Kampouris/Georgios Anastasiadis. The young boys from Cyprus – both natives of Famagusta – are among the 16 pairs that next year will be playing for a spot to make it to the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.
Actually their good performance in Rhodes doesn’t come from nowhere. They have claimed almost every single event organized by the Cyprus Volleyball Federation in their age group and two months ago they even won a tournament held on the island of Crete thereby getting the right boost of confidence for the remainder of the season.

However, the Zonal Phase tournament for the Continental Cup held in Rhodes was their real debut on the international stage. Georgios and Charalampos were extremely happy with their result but also with the excellent conditions they enjoyed there. “We went to Rhodes a week before the start of the tournament to adjust to the local conditions and also to prepare as good as possible for the Continental Cup. We were a little too nervous as we played Ukraine in our first match and we eventually lost that game. This was the first time we were playing for the national team of Cyprus internationally and hence we felt some pressure. However, we could regroup, played our best against Albania and Greece, so in the end we qualified for the final round” they say.

Of course they dream of winning a ticket to the Youth Olympics in Nanjing where Beach Volleyball will be included on the program of the Games for the first time. “We have to thank our Greek mentor Manolis Roumeliotis for he has laid the foundations for our career in the sport. We also have to thank Constantinos Karpathakis who was at our side in Rhodes since his advices were the key to our success. Of course we are grateful to the Cyprus Volleyball Federation for we got the opportunity to represent our country in this competition and the result is the best we could ask for as we just started our international career” they continue.

In about seven months Charalampos and Georgios will get the right to carry Cyprus hopes once more in the final stage of the Youth Continental Cup where they hope their Olympic dream will finally come true.
