29/08/2013 23:00 Top-seeded pairs make it to elimination phase at U18 European Champs 2013 CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship Molodechno, Belarus, August 29, 2013. The second day of action at the 2013 CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship in Molodechno determined the teams that – after three rounds in pool play – eventually advanced to the single elimination phase. As for the boys, the run for a spot in the knock-out stage remained open until the very last game and some matches were stretched to the tie-break as the teams wanted to get a better draw for the start of the second phase. The closest game did see Norway’s Anders Berntsen Mol/Martin Olimstad lose the first set 18-21 to Switzerland’s Florian Breer/Yves Haussener and a very dramatic battle followed in the second where the score was leveled at 22 before Mol/Olimstad cruised to the final 26-24. The guys from Norway did impose their physical skills in the tie-break to bring it home for a well-deserved win (15-11). The girls completed pool play with their third game and there were no major sensation as all pre-favorite teams made it to the elimination phase with the only surprise being Serbia’s Sara Jovicic and Ana Krstic, seeded no. 17 in Molodechno. The game that attracted the attention of the fans was the one in Pool A where home heroines Valeryia Babenka and Viktoryia Shalayeuskaya beat Italy’s Michela Lantignotti/Federica Frasca in two close sets to claim their third win and top the tables in their group. It was a very close game but with the support of their fans the Belarusians could seal a 2-0 win. The Italians also showed excellent skills but felt the pressure in the deciding moments thereby opening the door to their opponents. The next stage of the competition was joined also by the main favorites for the final crown, Russia’s Makroguzova/Rudykh and Germany’s Schneider/Welsch who completed pool play with three consecutive wins without conceding any set to their opponents.
