TV ratings boom for European Championship gold medal match
2013 CEV A1 Beach Volleyball European Championship Final presented by checkrobin.com
Klagenfurt, Austria, August 7, 2013. The 2013 CEV A1 Beach Volleyball European Championship Final presented by checkrobin.com held this past week in Klagenfurt did break many records but one stands apart from all other figures. On Saturday as home heroines Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger played Spain’s Liliana/Baquerizo in the final match of the women’s tournament, and even though temperatures had risen up to 35° in Austria, 129,000 people – for a share of 17% - tuned in to follow the game on ORF1.
“This was by far the most watched program aired by ORF1 on that day” proudly says Peter Kleinmann, President of the Austrian Volleyball Federation (OeVV). Right before the start of the gold medal match, only 38,000 people – for a share standing at 9% - had followed Gossip Girl on ORF1, but almost 100,000 more came by the time the Schwaiger sisters squared off on centre court in what was the last stage of their quest for home glory. Once the game was finished, the share registered by the same TV channel dropped down to 5% (36,000 followers).
The final match of the Beach Volleyball European Championship was followed by more people than the prime-time show aired on that day by ORF1 whose share stood at 12%. “There are many things we can be proud of as the curtain falls in Klagenfurt but this was an outstanding result for Beach Volleyball in Austria and in Europe as well” concludes Kleinmann.
