CEV U22 Beach Volleyball European Championships 2020
Izmir, Turkey, September 25, 2020. The 2020 edition of #EuroBeachVolleyU22 continued on Friday in Izmir at the idyllic Pamucak Beach, with completion of the pool stage. The teams performing by the shores of the Aegean Sea contested their last matches in the group phase of the competition before the start of the knockout round followed next.
Home heroes Eren Kanli/Ali Cebeci, the only Turkish team in the competition, lost their Round of 24 match against Ukraine’s Pavlo Plotnik and Vladyslav Pavliuk in straight sets (14-21, 19-21) to bid farewell to the championship.
The three Russian teams, as well as Rudy Schneider and Mio Wüst of Germany, Gianluca Dal Corso and Tobia Marchetto of Italy, Poland’s Milosz Kruk and Mikolaj Miszczuk and Sweden’s David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig all completed a clean sweep of their matches in the pool stage. These teams have all progressed directly to the Round of 16.
In the women’s competition, third-seeded Daniela Alvarez and María Belén Carro of Spain, who claimed #EuroBeachVolleyU22 bronze last year in Antalya, defeated Israel’s Noga Maor and Yahli Ashush 2-0 (21-18, 21-13) in straight sets and on Saturday they will face Michaela Brinkova and Kylie Neuschaeferova of the Czech Republic with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake.
One of the most anticipated matches of the day featured Lithuania’s Rugile Grudzinskaite/Gerda Grudzinskaite and Poland’s Aleksandra Stadnik and Patrycja Jundzill – playing on the centre court. The Grudzinskaite sisters delivered a great performance and they stormed to a comprehensive 2-0 (21-10, 21-19) victory in their matchup with the Poles.
On Saturday, the competition will resume as early as at 9:00 am with the Round of 16 matches.
