News from the National Federations
Izmir, Turkey, July 23, 2020. After the break imposed by the coronavirus crisis, Beach Volleyball activities are slowly but surely resuming in Europe and earlier this month the CEV confirmed that the Efes Selcuk area of Izmir would be hosting the 2020 edition of both the U18 and U22 Beach Volleyball European Championships in September.
The venue is one of the most popular and charming tourist destinations on the Aegean Sea and the two events will run in consecutive weeks during the second half of September.
On Wednesday, Mr Tunc Soyer, Mayor of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, attended a special promotional event organised ahead of the two Beach Volleyball continental championships, held at the Air Gas Factory in Efes Selcuk, Izmir. Mr Soyer wished already a very warm welcome to all those due to travel to Izmir.
The Vice-President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation, Mr Alper Sedat Aslandas stated that hosting these championships represents a truly special opportunity to raise the level and popularity of Beach Volleyball in Turkey. Moreover, he expressed his hope that the home teams will be achieving results paying back the efforts made through the past couple of years to grow and develop the sport in Turkey.
As many as 128 teams and 256 athletes from about 35 countries are due to contest the events in Izmir, with the U18 tournament running from September 16 to 20 and the U22 competition following a week later from September 23 to 27.
Turkey are yet to win a medal at any of the age-group Beach Volleyball European Championships and the hosts will be hoping to use the home-court advantage to achieve this historic feat.
