Qualifiers set tone for World Tour event at iconic location in Budapest
2019 World Tour 1-Star - Budapest
Budapest, Hungary, August 8, 2019. The FIVB World Tour 1-Star event started on Thursday in Budapest in a truly iconic environment at Lupa Lake, in the outskirts of the Hungarian capital. The organisers have moved the tournament from last year’s location in Siófok to Lupa Beach, which provides the ideal setting for a Beach Volleyball competition of this calibre for teams and fans alike.
At this very same venue, the MKB-Pannonia Beach Volleyball Hungarian Championship finished on Sunday, thus making space, so to speak, for the World Tour event. On Thursday, the programme featured the men’s and women’s qualifiers, with four teams per gender eventually progressing to the Main Draw.
Lithuania’s Gerda Grudzinskaite/Karole Virbickaite, Serbia’s Natasa Savovic/Milena Matic, Switzerland’s Lea Buser/Anna Lutz and Russia’s Daria Mastikova/Polina Tsyganova all made it to the Main Draw. Slovenia’s Vid Jakopin/Tadej Bozenk, gold medal winners last Sunday in Ljubljana, achieved the same feat in the men’s tournament – as did Poland’s Michal Korycki/ Jaroslaw Lech and Sebastian Kaczmarek/Adrian Sdebel as well as Samuele Cottafava/Jakob Windisch of Italy.
Mihails Samoilovs/Aleksandrs Solovejs from Latvia are the no. 1 seed of the men’s competition, with Japan’s Chiyo Suzuki and Yurika Sakaguchi topping the entries in the women’s tournament.
