Dutch youngsters claim second World Tour gold in Alba Adriatica
2019 World Tour 1-Star - Alba Adriatica
Alba Adriatica, Italy, July 14, 2019. Emi van Driel and Raisa Schoon of the Netherlands are the eventual winners of the 1-Star World Tour tournament held in Alba Adriatica, Italy. The silver medallists from this year’s U20 European Championship recorded a comprehensive 21-17, 21-11 victory over Italy’s Gaia Traballi and Agata Zuccarelli in the gold medal match.
The young Dutchwomen – Schoon is only 17 and Van Driel 19 – were clearly the dominant force in the final of the event, with Traballi/Zuccarelli making too many mistakes to pose a real threat, especially in the first set. The Oranjes played an impeccable game in the second set, preventing any comeback from the home favourites, who on Monday will be flying to Canada to contest the 3-Star World Tour event due to be taking place in Edmonton.
Schoon and Van Driel secured their second World Tour gold medal after seizing top honours earlier this year in Göteborg as well. As for Traballi and Zuccarelli, the silver medal is the best result they have achieved so far on the international stage – an improvement on the fourth place they claimed in Nanjing, China.
There was more to celebrate for the Netherlands as Katja Stam and Julia Wouters secured the bronze medals after delivering a flawless performance in the ‘small final’ against Federica Frasca and Arianna Barboni of Italy (21-16, 21-17).
The event in Alba Adriatica, the first of this kind held at the seaside resort, featured teams from as many as 16 countries across the globe.
