Teams from Italy, Germany, Japan and Netherlands cash ticket to Alba Adriatica Main Draw
2019 World Tour 1-Star - Alba Adriatica
Alba Adriatica, Italy, July 12, 2019. Teams from Italy, Japan, Germany and the Netherlands secured their spot in the Main Draw of the 1-Star World Tour tournament in Alba Adriatica, the first such event held in the seaside resort on the Adriatic coastline. As a result, as many as five Italian teams will contest the Main Draw due to begin on Saturday morning.
Japan’s Mayu Sawame/Miyu Sakamoto made it to the Main Draw with a 2-1 victory (16-21, 21-14, 15-11) over Viktoryia Siakretava/Lizaveta Chabai of Belarus before pulling out a 2-0 (21-18, 21-12) win in their second match of the day, against Diana Zolnercikova and Michaela Knoblochova of the Czech Republic. Knoblochova is a well-known face from Snow Volleyball events – and a former ‘Queen of the Snow’ with Anna Dostalova.
Germany’s Leonie Klinke and Lisa-Sophie Kotzan qualified for the Main Draw as well, courtesy of a 2-0 (21-16, 21-17) victory over Italy’s Giulia Toti and Silvia Leonardi, who struggled with the stormy weather affecting the competition in Alba Adriatica on Friday afternoon.
However, there was something to celebrate for the Italian fans as Jessica Jenifer Luca/Eleonora Annibalini cashed a ticket to the Main Draw after a hard-fought 2-1 victory (21-17, 11-21, 15-9) in their match with Bulgaria’s Irena Mishonova and Svetla Angelova and a 2-0 win (21-13, 21-18) in their clash with Fanny Lindström and Sara Malmström of Sweden. Mexime van Driel and Iris Reinders of the Netherlands were the remaining team to qualify for the Main Draw.
There will be five Italian tandems contesting the 16-team Main Draw on Saturday, with Luca/Annibalini joining Gaia Traballi/Agata Zuccarelli, Chiara They/Alice Gradini, Federica Frasca/Arianna Barboni and Margherita Bianchin/Reka Orsi Toth. The competition will resume on Saturday morning at 8:30 am and continue until late in the afternoon to determine the teams progressing to the quarterfinals scheduled for Sunday morning.
