Doppler and Horst cap fabulous weekend for Austria with second Baden gold
2019 World Tour 1-Star - Baden Open
Baden, Austria, June 10, 2019. In a truly successful weekend for Austria’s Volleyball family, Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst added further reasons to celebrate as they claimed the gold medal from the World Tour 1-Star event held at Strandbad in Baden.
Two Austrian teams locked horns in the semis with Doppler/Horst edging Alexander Huber and Christoph Dressler to stay in contention for a second straight gold medal in Baden.
Huber/Dressler had to be content with playing for bronze against Spanish sensation Alejandro Huerta and Cesar Menendez – who had made it this far in the tournament starting from the qualification. The ambiance was very hot on and off the court, and the players fought like crazy to deliver a dramatic and very entertaining match. Huerta and Menendez capped a fabulous week with a 16-14 tiebreak win to claim a spot on the rostrum.
Doppler/Horst played before a full stadium as they took on Russia’s Maxim Sivolap and Artem Yarzutkin in the final. The home stars stormed to a 2-0 victory to repeat their gold medal performance from last year. “The final was amazing and we would like to thank the crowd because they had to cope with the heat as well but they stayed and fired us up all the time. Many thanks to the organisers and everyone that was here to support us,” Doppler said.
The programme of the final day, between semis and medal matches, included the last stage of the Beach School Cup featuring young boys and girls as well as mixed teams competing in front of the passionate centre court crowd. There was further fun and entertainment with the Kronehit Promi Tournament, where two Austrian players from the qualification round, Moritz Fabian Kindl and Laurenz Leitner, played against each other, each one along with one of two fans that had been the lucky winners of a drawing of lots.
