Olympic qualification process to start with Montpellier 1-Star event
2018 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Montpellier
Montpellier, France, August 27, 2018. The city of Montpellier will be hosting from Tuesday to Saturday a FIVB World Tour 1-Star/CEV Satellite event, which coincides with the start of the qualification process for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This makes the ranking points at stake there even more valuable for the teams participating in the tournament. On top of this, it is the very first time in history that Montpellier is hosting a World Tour event, with participation of some 50 teams ready to take to the court at Théâtre Hélios.
The French teams are especially willing to deliver a very strong performance on home turf. Romain Di Giantommaso and Jérémy Silvestre recently captured their first FIVB World Tour gold medal as they edged Matas Navickas/Patrikas Stankevicius of Lithuania on Sunday in Siofok, Hungary.
In Switzerland, youngsters Maxime Thiercy and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat finished third at the stop of the Coop Beach Tour held in Rorschach. As for Youssef Krou and Quincy Ayé, another French team starring in the tournament, they sound motivated as well: “We want to get the best possible start to the Olympic qualification process and as a result, it is absolutely necessary to take a medal from the FIVB World Tour event in Montpellier.”
The women’s competition will be an interesting one as well. The qualification for the Main Draw will take place on Tuesday, starting at 9 am, while the Main Draw will follow from Wednesday to Saturday. There is free entrance to the matches as a further incentive to visit the venue and cheer for the many elite and up-and-coming teams competing in Montpellier.
