Siófok, Hungary, August 23, 2018. From Thursday to Sunday, a 2018 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 1-Star/Satellite with a total prize money of EUR 10,000 will be held in Siófok. Teams representing 23 countries, including ten Hungarian duos, will measure their strength on sand.
This is the second time Siófok hosts an international Beach Volleyball tournament. However, compared to last year, the tournament on the shores of Lake Balaton is not only a part of the CEV Beach Volleyball tour, but has been added to the FIVB World Tour as well. As a result, teams from the Republic of South Africa, Japan, Canada and New Zealand will join the traditional European line-up to fight for top honours in Hungary.
“The level of the organisation of last year's competition earned us the CEV's special prize, and we don't want to go below this year,” Dr Agnes Bánki, the chairman of the Hungarian Beach Volleyball Committee said at the press conference held on Wednesday, looking back to 2017 when Siófok Satellite was awarded as runners-up for Best event image and identity across all Satellite and Youth Continental Cup events.
CEV/FIVB Technical Supervisor, Oguz Degirmenci from Turkey admitted that he was very pleased with the preparations, and although the classification of the tournament is 1-Star, he considers that it would be easy to meet the conditions of a multi-star event as well.
56 teams will compete in the double-gender 1-Star/Satellite in the resort city of Siófok. A full qualification will be played on Thursday; the Main Draw action will start on Friday morning and will reach its climax late on Sunday, when the eventual winners will be crowned.
