08/07/2018 09:00 Teams from six countries chase Poreč 1-Star event gold medals 2018 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Poreč Poreč, Croatia, July 8, 2018. The 1-Star Satellite in Poreč will be reaching its climax on Sunday with the men’s and women’s semi-finals determining which teams will be playing for gold and bronze later in the day. There are no Croatian teams in contention for the medals anymore after Filip Silic and Josip Pribanic lost on Saturday their quarterfinal match to Sergiy Popov and Vladyslav Iemelianchyk of Ukraine (15-21, 15-21). Latvia have as many as two teams in the men’s semis - Toms Smedins and Haralds Regza lived up to their status of pre-favourites as they swept three matches in a row, including a 21-16, 21-14 victory over Austria’s Felix Friedl and Maximilian Trummer in the quarterfinals. Smedins and Regza will open the programme of the men’s semis at 11.00 am playing another Austrian team, Jörg Wutzl and Simon Frühbauer. In the other semi-final, Latvian rising stars Mihails Samoilovs and Kristaps Smits will be playing Popov and Iemelianchyk. Toms Smedins and Haralds Regza of Latvia remain the hottest favourites for men’s gold in Poreč The women’s semis feature teams from four different countries. Ukrainian twins Inna and Iryna Makhno play Turkey’s Merve Nezir and Aleyna Vence (pictured above). In the other semi-final, USA’s Emily Sonny and Torrey Van Winden take on Greece’s Dimitra Manavi and Konstantina Tsopoulou. Sonny and Van Winden have yet to lose a set in the Main Draw and have become the crowd’s favourites after they started their journey in the qualification round on Thursday where they beat teams from Italy and Hungary.
