Teams from six countries claim Main Draw spots at Samsun Open

Samsun, Turkey, July 26, 2018. After completion of the qualification round, teams from the Netherlands, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and South Africa secured a spot in the Main Draw of the 1-Star event, which is taking place from Thursday to Sunday in Samsun, Turkey.
Stefan Boermans and Casper Haanappel (pictured above) from the Netherlands opened the men’s qualification round playing against Japan’s Hidehiko Nishizawa and Toshiharu Kojima. Their strong defence game and Boermans’ incredible blocks contributed towards a landslide 21-13 first set win for the Dutch side. After taking the opening set, Boermans and Haanappel comfortably claimed the second as well (21-15) to seal a 2-0 victory and move on to the second round of qualifications.
There, the Dutch side competed against the higher-seeded Florian Ertl/Simon Baldauf of Austria and surprised with a 23-21 win in the first set. The Austrian team managed to draw level in the second (21-15). However, Boermans/Haanappel won the tiebreak 15-13 to join the Main Draw.
Botond Olah and Balazs Benko of Hungary beat Turkey’s Emirhan Ulutas/Mecit Eryilmaz 2-1 (21-13, 18-21, 15-10) and qualified to the Main Draw as well. Leo Williams/Shaien Govender (RSA) and Jakub Gala/David Kufa (CZE) beat their respective opponents from Czech Republic and Serbia to claim the two remaining spots in the Main Draw.

In the women’s qualification, the Italian team Carolina Ferraris/Francesca Michieletto claimed a 21-12, 21-17 victory over Japan’s Hiroko Matsuyama/Marie Wada to progress to the next stage of the competition.
Poland’s Marta Lodej/Marta Duda competed against Romania’s youngsters Elena-Andreea Petrosanu/Andreea Iustina Corcoz. The Polish team won the match in straight sets (21-15, 21-14) to join Ferraris/Michieletto in the Main Draw. Due to the low number of teams competing in the women’s qualifications, Nicole Dostalova/Anna Komarkova (CZE) and Simone Sittig/Luciana Pierangeli (RSA) did not have to contest any matches to seize a spot in Friday’s Main Draw.
