Slovenian teenagers Zdešar and Bulc dream big
2018 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Ljubljana
Ljubljana, Slovenia, August 4, 2018. Young Slovenian hopefuls Nina Zdešar and Katarina Bulc decided a little while ago to quit indoor Volleyball and focus exclusively on Beach Volleyball. They are only 15 and 17 years old, but they rightfully dream big.
Earlier this season, they made their World Tour debut taking part at the 1-Star events held in Alanya, Baden and Poreč, where they failed to progress to the Main Draw.
They eventually had the opportunity to contest Main Draw matches this week on home turf in Ljubljana, where they sensationally made it to the elimination round. They did so courtesy of their dramatic 2-1 victory in the pool phase over Portugal’s third-seeded Gabriela Coelho and Vanessa Paquete.
The young girls who represented Slovenia at last year’s U18 European Championship in Kazan obviously enjoyed the experience. “It is somehow more relaxing to play in the Main Draw because you know that even if you lose one game, you still get another one to play at least,” they recount.
They know each other very well judging from the short video interview they recorded in Ljubljana – and would love to play at the Olympics one day. For now, they have to be content with ninth place from the Ljubljana tournament after losing to Tereza Kotlasova/Daniela Resova of the Czech Republic 1-2 (22-20, 21-23, 13-15) in what was the longest match of the day on Saturday (61 minutes).
However, you can be sure that there is more to come for the cheerful Nina and Katarina, starting with their participation in this year’s #EuroBeachVolleyU18 in Brno in less than two weeks…
