Country Quota opens second straight weekend of Beach Volleyball action at Baden
2017 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship - Baden Masters
Baden, Austria, June 21, 2017. The 2017 edition of the Baden Masters started on Wednesday with the country quota matches involving teams from Austria and Germany in the men’s and women’s competition, respectively. Florian Schnetzer/Daniel Müllner (pictured) and Karla Borger/Margareta Kozuch eventually made it through to progress to the qualification round scheduled for Thursday.
Schnetzer/Müllner were the eventual winners of the Austrian country quota. In the first round, their opponents Martin Ermacora and Moritz Pristaug delivered a strong performance in the first set (21-13) but they could not keep that same pace in the second one, with Schnetzer and Müllner eventually taking 21-19, 15-10 wins to emerge victorious at the end of a close and thrilling match.
“Our tactics worked just fine in the first set but after losing the initial rhythm, our side-out game as well as our actions at serving and blocking did not produce the same results anymore,” said Martin Plessl, who works together with Ermacora and U22 European bronze medallist Pristauz.
Alexander Huber and Julian Hörl were the next opponents for Schnetzer and Müllner. The first set was a close affair with Schnetzer/Müllner eventually recording a 22-20 win; Huber and Hörl responded by taking the second 21-15 before Schnetzer/Müllner dominated at the net in the all-deciding tiebreak. They claimed a five-point lead and from there they did not look back anymore, this securing their progression to the qualification round.
2016 Olympian Karla Borger and partner Margareta Kozuch rallied to a comprehensive 21-15, 21-12 victory in the German country quota with Sandra Ittlinger/Teresa Mersmann, who had previously beaten Nadja Glenzke/Julia Grossner 2-1 (18-21, 21-15, 15-13).
